ADB Spouses Association Scholarship Fund
The ADB Spouses Association have been very successfully providing scholarships to students in Manila for over 30 years. In 2019, sixty-one students from 4 universities and two secondary schools have received scholarships. Through a careful selection process these scholarships have been awarded to high academically achieving, disadvantaged students from low-income families. The scholarship of about 10,000 peso per student for an academic year, covers various incidental costs associated with their education including laboratory fees, textbooks, printing costs and transport. A dedicated small group of ADB staff spouses form the Scholarship Committee who liaises with the educational institutions. A highlight of the year is to visit the schools and universities and meet the selected scholars. The Scholarship Committee also liaises with the ADBSA over fundraising events throughout the year, as well as, organising an annual Garage Sale, of second hand items from generous ADB families, with the funds going directly to support the programs. On many visits to the universities and schools the Scholarship Committee have heard the students stress the importance of this funding to assist them with the successful completion of their studies. The students are from families struggling with illness, death and various other misfortunes and who would otherwise not be able to support their children’s studies. While direct fees for study at many State Universities in the Philippines are relatively low, there are hundreds of other costs that make it very difficult for students from the poorest families to educate their children. When we meet these students they all indicate that their immediate goal is to get qualified, to enable them to obtain a good job so that they can assist their families with the education of the younger brothers and sisters. Our small scholarship funding is multiplied by the selfless determination of the students who receive them. We believe the scholarship-funding makes a small but lasting difference. We would welcome your support.Peter Naumann
