I am a Professor of Economics at Florida International University and an affiliated professor of MIT’s Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, J-PAL. I am also a Research Fellow at IZA and GLO and a Research Affiliate of the International Growth Centre. Originally from Bangladesh, I am an applied economist working on global development issues, with a focus on evidence-based policy research.
My research interests are in development and labor economics, with particular emphasis on financial inclusion, migration, education, infrastructure, human capital, climate vulnerability, and social protection. I have extensive experience designing and implementing field experiments and impact evaluations in South Asia, West Africa, and other developing-country contexts. Several of my completed and ongoing projects use randomized controlled trials and field data to study policy-relevant questions in low- and middle-income countries.
My research has been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Health Economics, World Development, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, and interdisciplinary journals such as American Journal of Public Health and Nature Scientific Reports. I also published an edited book, Seasonality and Microcredit: The Case of Northern Bangladesh, with Springer.
I have received several awards and recognitions, including the Khalifa International Award for Early Learning, the JADE Fuwa Award, Florida International University’s Top Scholar Award, the ADB-IEA Innovative Policy Research Award, the Albert Berry Prize from the Canadian Development Economics Study Group, the Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship, and the Neil Vousden Memorial Scholarship.
