Basic: I talk and act out, they draw. With more advanced groups, you could have a student play that role . Extension activities:
Have all students stand a set distance away from the board where all the drawings are. Read a sentence and the last student to find and put their figure on a corresponding picture is out.
Have students retell/reread the story pointing to parts of their or someone else’s drawing.
Use a cartoon template like this one. Usually I tell the story and act it out, but do not draw any pictures to reinforce understanding.
Use a more general cartoon template like this one. Have students cut up the images and mix them up then give them to another group to put in order. You can time the activity and give awards too.
Divide the board into chunks and assign each chunk a section of the story. Make the same number of groups of students as chunks. Each group gets 20 seconds to draw in a section and then the groups rotate and add to what is drawn in the next section of the board. Rotate enough time so each group reads and draws in each section of the story. I promise that whatever they can get up I will leave up for the exit ticket as motivation.
Give out cartoon templates, but have the students rotate templates every 20 seconds so that everyone draws on 4 or 5 templates and you end up with group made illustrations. Then have students walk around and vote on their favorite and most accurate illustrations.
