November 21, 2017 Meeting Announcement

Topic: Earned Schedule

Presenter: Mark Ogg

Earned schedule (ES) is an emerging scheduling practice and extension to the practice of earned value management (EVM).

When a project is nearing completion—schedule performance is almost always a primary concern. Traditional EVM tracks schedule variances in units of currency, not units of time. Constructionprojects normally track schedule variance in units of time. Use of traditional EVM schedule metrics, such as schedule performance index (SPI) and schedule variance (SV) in construction, won’talways tell the whole story. When a project completes, using traditional metrics will show that a project completes exactly on schedule—even when it was delivered late.

Earned Schedule corrects this problem by representing the schedule performance and schedule variance domains with respect to currency and time. The earned schedule method identifies the time that an amount of earned value (EV) should have been earned. By determining this time, time-based indicators can be formed to provide more accurate schedule variance and schedule performance information.
