In order to practically collect information on how students engage in Writing Workshop, I selected three students who are representative of students typically found in my teaching context. Each student is interesting and unique with a range of general English proficiency, attitudes, motivations, and personalities. While being careful to give every student in class as equal an amount of attention as possible, I was able to follow these three students closely as they participated in Writing Workshop.
Aiden
Aiden is a model students in every regard. His social intelligence and compassion make him a good friend to peers. He finds school to be an exciting, engaging experience and tries to do well in all activities he attempts. Quick to learn, Aiden is quick to help others succeed as well. Wit and humor make Aiden a fun student to interact with.
Jun Lee
Jun Lee is loved by everyone. He has a bright personality and plays well with others. While he is emotive and expressive when speaking, some teachers and his parents worry that his disinterest in literacy in both English and Korean could hold him back.
Grace
Grace has long had a drive to be the best in every measurable way. She has taken the role as class leader in many respects. Grace is outgoing, emotive, and passionate. She maintains high expectations of herself and her work. While competitive with others at times, Grace's ability to lead and direct a small group or partnership keeps members on task and working towards the goal of an activity.
