One Friday afternoon in April 2010 while enjoying a few cold one's at Merv Green's Tatts Hotel, as is their want on Fridays, Ross Walker and Dave Cutler came up with the idea to challenge each other to a heroic beer drinking odyssey.
They would attempt to savour the tastes of 50 different beers from 50 countries in 50 weeks starting from that very day.
Merv Green, as publican and locally recognised beer drinking champion was invited to accept the challenge. This he did in a moment and the team was expanded to 3 members.
It was agreed to challenge Rex when next he shared our company.
Our target is to enjoy 50 beers from 50 countries at a rate no less than 1 different beer
every week for the 50 weeks that the challenge shall be undertaken.
To obtain and post photographic evidence of all beers we drink and any celebratory actions
we may undertake in the process of completing the challenge.
Our heroic band of beer drinkers will benefit from the challenge by building their integrity and
beer drinking sustainability. They will also widen the scope of their experience with the flavours
of international beers and therefore be more knowledgeable in the area of beer appreciation.
1. To appreciate a different beer each week.
2. To drink that beer until it can be turned upside down and the last drop savoured.
3. To take regular turns shouting the beer of the week for all members present at the time.
4. To enjoy the companionship of all members in a non discriminatory way.
5. That all members be present at all weekly challenges to the best of their ability.
1. Any stubby or can of beer that has been imported into Australia from it's country of origin.
2. Any 385ml or 500ml glass container not polluted by inferior product filled from a genuine imported beer container mutually accepted by not less than 3 full upstanding members.
3. Any other container that meets a majority of present members criteria as a genuine imported beer that has not been previously drunk by the team during this challenge.
1. Members shall take regular turns in the position of Beer Selector.
2. It is the responsibility of the weekly selector to obtain the beer of the week for members to enjoy.
3. Countries may only be selected once each during the challenge.
4. All members shall defer to the expertise of the Beer Selector at all times.
5. Any new members must, on pain of receiving a Stiff Oral Upbraiding, catch up with existing members in the order and types of beers consumed by all members up to the date of joining.
6. These rules may only be changed when and if the 2 founding members are in agreement with the proposal and the proposed change is voted on and accepted by a minimum of 4 members who are current with the challenge at the time of the vote.
7. To ensure all beers are selected for enjoyment, if any member finds the Beer of the Week to be inferior and not to their taste, then that member has the option to demand the Beer Selector consume it in their stead.
