Many Iranians and the new leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini were angry that the shah (Mohammad Pahlavi) fled Iran and went to America. They wanted the shah to come back and face trial for the religious laws he had broken by allying with America and accepting American views and ideas.
On November 4, 1979, Iranian students, with the support of the Iranian government stormed the U.S. embassy and took hostage more than 60 Americans who were working in the embassy. Khomeini issued a statement in which he said they would not free the American hostages until America returned the shah (Mohammad Pahlavi) and gave billions of dollars to the Iranian government.
