Union Artillery Uniform For Privates

The Uniform for an Artillery Private in the Union Army during the American Civil War consisted of many different pieces of wool and cotton made attire.

Here is a list of things that would have been worn by a Union Artillery Private. All of these items can be picked up at Civil War Sutlers which can be found online and at American Civil War Reenactments, the list below shows some of the basic items needed to become a Union Artillery Private.

1) Union Artillery Shell Jacket with Red Piping.

2) Sky Blue Pants

3) A pair of suspenders.

4) A Pair of Brogans

5) either a Kepi, Forage Cap (Bummer), or Slouch hat with the Brass Letter (A), Number (1), and Crossed Cannons as shown on the Hat Below.

6) Sky Blue or Navy Blue Stainless Steel Canteen

7) A Red Cotton Shirt to wear under your Shell Jacket.
