Measurement lab 1
1. “Test 1”
a. With your finger, draw a “Q” on your forehead. The tail of the “Q” ended up pointing at
1. Your right eye
2. Your left eye
b. Do you salt your food
1. before tasting it
2. after tasting it
c. Get and take the self-monitoring scale from one of the following sites:

1. What was your score?
2. According to the scale, are you low, moderate, or high on self-monitoring?
3. According to the scale, how should you behave? To answer this question, you may need to consult the following sources:
Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivxAr6e4BHgIf
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-monitoring
Article abstract http://www.accessmylibrary.com/article-1G1-172685200/dark-side-self-monitoring.html
If you scored moderate, you can answer the question by discussing how you would behave if you were high or low (e.g., "If I had been a high self-monitor, ...").
4. Refer back to questions 1a and 1b. Low self-monitors are more likely to put the tail of the “Q” facing their right eye, whereas high self-monitors put the tail of the “Q” facing their left eye. Low self-monitors are more likely to salt their food before tasting it, whereas high self-monitors are more likely to salt their food after tasting it. Did you follow this pattern?
2. Take an IAT (implicit attitude test) at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/demo/
a. What was measured by the test you took?
b. Did you agree with the results?
c. Click on the “Background” button (on the top, middle of the page). Read the “Background information” page and explore the links under “General Information.” Then, explain what the IAT measures and how it measures it. If you want more information on the IAT, watch the youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5Q5FQfXZag
3. Take one of the following five factor tests

What were your scores on the five factors? According to the tests, what is your personality like?
4. Take one of the following tests
o A 40-item (15 min) Sensation-Seeking Scale (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/sensation/index.shtml)
o A 35-question (10 min) perfectionism scale (http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/perfectionism/index.shtml)
o A locus of control scale

a. Did you like taking the test? Why or why not?
b. Could you see using one of these tests in your own research? If not, browse the following sources of tests and find one you could use.

Go to one of the following sites and take the Ice Cream Personality Test
· www.personalityquiz.net/foodtests/icecream.htm
· http://www.icecream.com/funfacts/index.asp?b=104
· http://www.angelfire.com/ga/sweetgeorgiapeach/icecream.html

To evaluate the validity of the test, use the grid below to see whether self-descriptions relate to ice cream preferences. For example, if someone chose “a” as describing themselves (e.g., they viewed themselves as “colorful, impulsive, a risk taker…” ) and their favorite ice cream flavor was vanilla, you would put a tally mark in the first row of the first column. If, on the other hand, their favorite flavor was chocolate, put a mark in the second row of the first column. Get data from all the people in your lab.
Suppose you had 30 participants and the ice cream test was perfectly valid (all 5 people who described themselves as colorful preferred vanilla, all five lively people preferred chocolate, etc.). In that case, your table would resemble the one below.
If, on the other hand, the ice cream personality test had no validity, you might obtain results like the following:
Use any of the following chi square calculators to see whether the test has any validity.

http://www.physics.csbsju.edu/cgi-bin/stats/contingency_form.sh?nrow=6&ncolumn=6
http://people.ku.edu/~preacher/chisq/chisq.htm
http://www.opus12.org/Chi-Square_Calculator.html
A. What did you find? Is the test a valid measure of personality?
B. You attempted to validate the ice cream measure against people’s own self-descriptions. Are there other measures you could use? If so, what?
C. Suppose there had not been a chocolate chip option, so the ice cream scale had put people into one of first five categories: neurotic, extraverted, conscientious, agreeable, or introverted. To determine the ice cream personality test’s validity, to what measures could you compare the ice cream scale? (Hint: Look at earlier parts of this assignment.)
To estimate test-retest reliability, re-administer the test to all the people in your lab . Chart the results in a table like the one on the next page. Then, input the data from that table into one of the chi square calculators listed above.
D. Is the Ice Cream Test reliable? How do you know?
E. For practical reasons, we administered the retest the same day as the test. In your opinion, how long should we have waited before giving a retest?
F. Could the Ice Cream Test be valid but not reliable? Why or why not?
G. Could the Ice Cream Test be reliable, but not valid? Why or why not?
H. Could the Ice Cream Test be used as a valid measure of ice cream preferences? Why or why not?
