Since Rutgers University integrated with UMDNJ, 180 West Market St was taken over from a management company and integrated into the university’s Residence Life program. In the transition period immediately following the integration, we have worked to make sure that the building is up to code and meets all regulations set forth by the University.
We have been working with University Fire officials to find ways to ensure that our Fire Safety equipment is up to date. It has been determined by the University Fire Marshalls that there should be monthly inspections of smoke detectors as well as yearly building wide inspections, fire dills, and sprinkler system inspections that can occur without prior notification.
While we understand that visits may seem excessive they are necessary to make sure that we are complying to Fire Safety codes and regulations. Our department tries its best to notify residents of inspections, schedule them when academic times are not at their peak and provide escorts. However, it is possible for the University Fire Inspectors to enter without prior notifications or escorts.
On page 16 we have our Fire Safety Policy which reads as follows:
Fire Safety Policy
Due to the extreme dangers presented by fire hazards in student rooms, the University will continually monitor all living areas through Residence Life Staff visits and formal, unannounced inspections by representatives of the University Fire Department, Residence Life and University Facilities. Fire extinguishers, smoke and heat detectors, fire alarm bells, and pull stations are critical to life safety and should never be damaged, vandalized, or misused. State and Federal laws require stiff penalties for the abuse of these items. Do not place combustible articles on radiators or radiator covers. Do not attach anything to the ceiling light fixture or ceiling mounted sprinklers and/or smoke detectors. Do not overload electrical outlets. Multiple plug adapters are permitted ONLY when not more than two (2) appliance cords are attached. Only one (1) plug adapter is permitted per wall receptacle.

If there any concerns about the actions of the Fire Inspectors/ Marshalls or any university employee, please email me your concerns and we will address them accordingly.
We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to continue working together to provide an optimal living environment.
