PALM SUNDAYJOURNEY TO THE CROSS
To commemorate Palm Sunday, many churches have Palm branches placed in the aisles as a remembrance of Jesus and the day He rode into Jerusalem. They are a reminder to all of us of the journey Jesus made that would lead Him to the cross. Palm branches were like a national flag to the Jews. These branches stood for freedom, by waving those branches the people were saying that they wanted freedom from the Roman rule.
Jesus had been staying in Bethany, but He knew the time had come for Him to go to Jerusalem. He knew He must start on His journey that would lead Him to the cross. As Jesus and His disciples started to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover Feast, He told two of them to go to the next village. He told them they would find a colt who had never been ridden before tied next to its mother and he instructed them to untie it and bring it back to Him. If anyone says anything just tell them Jesus is in need of it and that person will let you take it. The disciples went into town and found the colt just as Jesus had said and the owner let them take the little donkey that Jesus would ride on His journey. As He got close to Jerusalem riding on the little donkey, many people went out to meet Him waving Palm branches. All the people knew this was Jesus and they knew about miracles He had performed and they wanted to see Him. The people wanted to honor Jesus as their promised King and Messiah. “Hosanna to the Son of David” they all shouted loudly, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Many people only owned one coat, but they all removed them and placed them and the Palm branches before the little donkey so it would have a soft place to walk to carry Jesus.
As we view the Palm branches, we think what this day really meant to Jesus. This would be a special day because Jesus knew God was in control of His life, and He would do God’s will even if it meant His death. Jesus knew the people in Jerusalem wanted Him for their King but He knew His Father in Heaven had something more important for Him to do. God had sent His only Son to earth to die for all of our sins that we could have eternal life and a home in Heaven. He took our place on that old rugged cross. The best part is He lived, He died, and He lives again in the hearts of all who believe. He has now made His journey from Jerusalem to the cross and is now in Heaven. Soon He will return to take us home.
HE LIVED, HE DIED, HE AROSE, AND HE LIVES AGAIN, AND HE IS COMING BACK
