My name is Rodney ‘Star’ Thornley, and I am running for a position two in the 46th legislative district. Star is a nickname from High School and has been my license plate since 1970.
I am running because I want to change the culture in the Washington legislature. The parties are too siloed and putting party first over citizens I want that to change, where working for our citizens is the priority.
Too many people feel ignored by elected officials, like nobody's listening to them. I am here to listen.
I am running as an independent because I believe in diving into the issues rather than resting on a pre-established platform. Most Americans are more complex than a D or R dichotomy, and my candidacy will reflect that complexity. I want to serve and do what is best for the people of Washington State.
While I was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, I spent my formative years here in Seattle. My family moved to the University District when I was in eighth grade, and I have called Seattle home ever since.
I went to Marshall Junior High and graduated from Roosevelt High School. I obtained a BA in Education from the University of Washington and taught in the Lake Washington School District for 46 years. As a Union rep for over 35 years, I learned a lot of fiscal responsibility and collaborative bargaining which is essential in bringing people and their issues together.
I remain involved in education still today as a substitute teacher at my alma mater, Roosevelt High School, and I coach boys JV basketball.
My leadership as a ten-term president of the Lake Sammamish Water Ski Club, and two term presidents of the basketball official’s association has given me skills to get people and ideas to compromise and work together. Without any experience or training in 1977 I organized the largest Seattle novice water ski competition on Greenlake in history.170 skiers. I remain very engaged in the Seattle community. You can find me on the basketball court as a referee, on the dance floor sharpening my hustle moves, teaching a first Aid course or on lakes skiing.
I love living in Seattle and the state of Washington. This city and state made me who I am today, it is my turn to be the listening ear for the constituents of District 46 and the stakeholders in Washington State. I want to represent you. I am here to listen.
My Inspiration
My Inspiration
My inspiration in life comes from my mom. A secretary for life and raising four kids, married to a long distant truck driver. She graduated from UW the same year my 2-year older sister graduated from UW with a degree in special education. After a stint at the Fircrest school she started her first group home for adults with developmental disabilities. Her first home was in 46th district, Licton Springs neighborhood. She also had another home in the Westside of Wedgwood also in the 46th district. She had the first group home for Prader-Willi Syndrome adults. She also authored two books, “Every Child Can Learn” and a book about my grandpa and his Ice Plant in Rhode Island. The Iceman of ““Post Road” She also fulfilled dreams of opening 2 container stores and a food trailer on the Burke Gillman trail. The wiser institute is under the name Camelot Society today and has many homes.
I share this as I learned a lot about getting things done with limited resources and great motivation and belief. That is how I will work for you on the 46th.
