Level 1 and 2 Certificate Training
This professional development is grounded in the principles of restorative justice, which focuses on repairing harm and building relationships rather than punishment. Restorative practices have been shown to improve school climate, reduce discipline referrals, and increase student engagement.
This section creates the foundational philosophy for Restorative Justice. We focus on understanding the principles of RJ and applying those principles to the classroom, beginning with the classroom/community building Circles - a simple practice that is essential to building a strong and inclusive community. We will continue to develop skills and strategies to address harm and conflict, while examining accessible strategies for utilizing language in ways that build and maintain strong connections of trust, encourage agency, and highlight the courage of vulnerability. Approaches introduced in this training include accountability circles, group author conferences, and restorative conferences. We will explore the role of authors, victims, support persons, community members, and facilitators within these various settings.
This course has two primary focus areas: facilitation skills and community readiness, including implementation planning and policy revision. We will focus on the core skills necessary for facilitating restorative circles and conferences, including how to foster open communication, create a safe space, and guide participants through conflict. You will learn techniques for structuring circles, handling challenging emotions, and ensuring every voice is heard.
Participants will also develop an implementation plan that covers how restorative practices can be effectively introduced into their own schools. Our investigation will include how restorative practices elements can be adapted to effectively promote healing, foster resilience, and build trust within the culturally diverse landscapes of international schools. Attendees will return to their school communities with concrete tools to strengthen connections and enhance emotional safety for students and staff alike.
