Below are the Essential Questions that students will explore in each unit through a wide variety of texts (see just some of those texts below). There will also be daily writing writing practice with a specific focus each quarter, and a two-week "AP Boot Camp" session in April to help prepare them for the AP Exam in May:
Q1: Intro to Rhetoric - What is rhetoric? Who is the intended audience of each author? How does an author’s rhetorical situation inform their rhetorical strategies? How do authors use a line of reasoning to develop their purpose/meaning?
Q2: Education and Identity - What does it mean to be educated? How does education impact one’s self identity? When does education empower or stifle one’s personal growth? What impact does education have on society?
Q3: Nature and Perspective Unit - In what ways does nature influence the sense of self and place in the world? How does a person's background, experiences, and identity influence their perspective on a particular issue? How can critical thinking and empathy help us engage with and understand perspectives that differ from our own?
Q4: The American Dream Unit - What is the American dream? What makes the American dream attainable for some but not for others? Has the definition of the American Dream changed? Who gets to describe what it means to be “American”?
