Creativity, self-expression, teamwork, individuality, concentration, acceptance, physical movement, vocal production, listening, and fun all contribute to a successful music-learning environment. Music is the universal language; we explore cultures from around the world, including our own rich musical history, learn how to read and understand the basic theory of music, and work both individually and as a group to perform with instruments, our bodies, and our voices. Students gain knowledge in, and an appreciation for, music through performing; responding vocally, instrumentally, and kinesthetically to performed or recorded music; and taking ownership of their musical knowledge by creating via improvisation or composition.
