WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE REFERRED TO THE SVUSD TPP PROGRAM?
- A student who is 16-21 years old and is presently enrolled in Simi Valley USD.
- A student who has an IEP or 504 plan
- The student must be able to perform job functions without extended job coaching or supported employment.
- Students who are motivated and available to participate in TPP services
HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE SVUSD TPP PROGRAM?
- Referred by a teacher, case manager, or can be self-referred
- Referrals can be made at any time during the school year or during the summer break
- Students who are seniors/approaching “aging-out” may be given priority to receive TPP services
- Student completes DR 203 - Request for Student Services and DR 260 -Release of Info (NOTE: Parent and student signatures/approval needed if the student is under age 18)
- TPP Employment Specialist will interview the student and parent/guardian, and select students who can best benefit from SVUSD TPP services
- Limited spots are available each year
- If the student is not selected, he/she may be referred to obtain Student Services directly from the DOR Student Services Program or Workability Program
- TPP is not an entitlement or school district program, it is a DOR Vocational Program
General Expectations
- The student will meet with TPP Employment Specialist in-person or online and will maintain periodic contact with the TPP Employment Specialist (frequency of meetings to be agreed upon by student and TPP staff)
- TPP Program is a year-round program so students may participate during breaks/summer
- Student will be available and willing to participate in TPP Student Services.
WHAT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE SVUSD TPP PROGRAM?
Career Exploration
- Interest inventories
- Informational interviews with professionals
- On-site job shadowing
- Exploration of job requirements (physical, educational, emotional)
Self-Advocacy
- Disclosure of disability – when/how/if
- Understanding of employment laws related to persons with disabilities
- Understanding of reasonable accommodations
Workplace Readiness
- Resume preparation
- Interview skills
- Job search skills
- Transportation training
Student Work Experience (may not be available to all students)
- This service provides an opportunity for a student to “try-out” a job at a worksite for up to 100 hours, or 3 months (whichever comes first). The student is not hired by the employer but receives payment at the prevailing wage as an employee of the SVUSD. Student wages are reimbursed to the district through the DOR's Student Services Program.
- Interested Students must be able to meet the requirements for the work experience and complete all required documentation during the process.
- Student workers are responsible for their own transportation to and from the worksite. TPP/DoR cannot directly provide transportation, but do offer public transportation training to interested students.
REQUIREMENTS FOR WORK EXPERIENCE
- Eligible to obtain a Work Permit (GPA 2.0 or higher, and no more than 7 absences)
- Work Permit Application
- Workman’s Compensation Assignment
- Parent/Guardian approval (if under age 18 or student is conserved)
- Reliable transportation to/from the worksite
- Identify or select a worksite to perform the work experience
- Complete an interview with the worksite supervisor to “apply” for the job
- If selected, the student must complete the SVUSD District Orientation Process
- Federal W4 Form

- Short-term support on the job/work experience may be provided as needed
WHEN DO SVUSD TPP SERVICES END?
A TPP Student Services case will be closed:
- If the student no longer needs or wants to participate in the program
- The student turns age 22
- The student exits high school and/or is no longer part of the school district
WHAT’S NEXT AFTER GRADUATION/EXIT FROM HIGH SCHOOL?
- A student can choose to apply for DOR Vocational Rehabilitation Services to continue to receive additional training and employment services.
- A student can continue receiving the same Student Services offered through the TPP/DOR Contract if he/she remains in a school program (either the district's post-secondary program or vocational training through the Simi Institute)
- A student can exit TPP Student Services if services are no longer needed/wanted
***NOTE***
Students not enrolled in the SVUSD TPP Program, may contact the local DOR office in Thousand Oaks to register for Student Services and obtain the same Student Services offered in the TPP program, as well as Post Secondary Training Exploration. Student Services can continue up to student’s 22nd birthday as long as they are still attending some type of school training (community college, vocational, university, other training programs)
