Writing an email

video vocabulary

  • phishing = Trying to trick someone into giving away information (such as their bank account number or their computer password.)
  • impersonate = to pretend to be someone else by copying their email, website, or logo
  • deceive = to make someone believe something that is not true
  • revealing = to make known something that was previously secret or unknown
  • fake = made to look like real in order to deceive people
  • "be wary" = be cautious and careful not to believe something is true
  • generic = something generic does not have a special name to show that it is from a particular person or company
  • double-check = to check very carefully; to look closely to see if something is real or fake
  • ignore = to act as if you had not heard or seen something
  • financial = having to do with money
  • secure = to make something safe from being stolen, or lost
  • scams = clever but dishonest ways to get money
  • cybercriminal = a person who steals by using scams on the computer or Internet

how to write email

Video Vocabulary

  • greeting = a statement of "Hello" __________, or "Dear ___________, when writing a letter or email
  • closing = a polite statement such as "Regards" or "Sincerely" before your signature
  • signature = the sender's name at the end of an email or letter
  • polite = speaking in a way that is correct for the social situation you are in, and showing that you are careful to consider other people’s feelings
  • common = something that is used often, and usually known by most people
  • variation = different ways of doing something, such as variations of greetings, ie: Hello, Hi, Dear etc.
  • appropriate = correct or suitable for a particular time, situation, or purpose
  • model = an example to follow
  • neighbors = people who live on the same street or area within a city or town

Gmail - Responding to Email

Video Vocabulary

  • reply = to send a response back to the sender of your email message
  • forward = to send an email you received on to someone else
  • attachment = a file that has been added to an email message. Attachments may be viewed or downloaded
  • inbox = the folder where new email messages appear
  • carbon copy = "cc" email addresses of people you'd like to see the message, but who are not the main recipient
  • suspicious = feeling that you do not trust someone or something
  • vacation reply = an automatic reply you can set up to let senders know you are not able to read their email until you return

Video Vocabulary

  • compose = to write an email message, letter etc.
  • recipient = someone who receives something
  • subject = the topic of something; what the email is about
  • body = main written part of the message
  • contacts = the list of recipients; email addresses of those we send to
  • cc = stands for "carbon copy" and is used to include a recipient who is not the main person an email goes to
  • bcc = stands for "blind carbon copy" and is similar to cc except that the recipient address cannot be seen by others
  • "in the loop" = to have knowledge of something; to be kept aware of something others may not know about
  • attach = to add a file to an email message (attachment)
  • flyer = a sheet of paper advertising something
  • hover = to put the cursor on something on a computer screen, using the mouse
  • gear icon = the icon in the upper right that stands for the settings menu
  • signature = a name at the bottom of the message to show who wrote it

What is a URL?

  • Uniform Resource Locator = a URL is the line of characters (letters, numbers & symbols) that are part of an internet address
  • portion = a part of something
  • scheme = the beginning portion of a web address (http:// and https:// are common schemes)
  • clutter = a large number of items that are scattered in an untidy way
  • Sub-Domain = first part of the domain name "www" is a very common sub-domain
  • Top-Level Domain = last part of the domain name such as .com or .org
  • File Path = these are the characters following the top-level domain and indicate a specific page within a site
  • Parameter String = begins with a "?" and indicates what the subject of the page is
  • Anchor = begins with a "#" and indicates a specific section of the page

The Cloud

  • meteorite = a piece of rock or metal from space that has landed on Earth
  • internet servers = the main computers on a network, which control all the others
  • hard drive = the part of a computer where information and programs are stored
  • web apps = online computer (applications) or software that does a particular job
  • cloud based storage services = companies offering a place to keep your photos or providing back-up services to copy your files
  • multi media = a mixture of sound, pictures, video, and writing to give information
  • back-up files = a computer file in which you have put all the same information so that you can use it if something should happen to the original

Getting Online

Video Vocabulary

  • home internet connection (wireless home network) = The system set-up that lets you make contact with the internet
  • Dial-up = uses a regular phone line to connect to the internet and is the slowest type of connection
  • DSL and Cable = are known as Broadband internet connections (DSL uses a special phone connection and Cable uses the same line as your cable television)
  • 3G & 4G = types of wireless connections often used by smartphones and sometimes available in homes
  • ISP = Internet Service Provider - a company you pay to have internet service
  • modem = a tool that connects your computer to the internet
  • Ethernet cable = the name of the internet cable for wired connections
  • wireless router (used to create a Wi Fi network) = a device that takes the internet connection from your modem and broadcasts it throughout your home
  • SSID = your home network name
  • wireless card = a device that adds wireless connectivity to a laptop or desktop computer

The Internet

Video Vocabulary

  • The Internet = a global network of interconnected computers
  • The World Wide Web (www) = the vast collection of pages we can view once connected to the internet
  • server = the main computer on a network, which controls all the others
  • domain name server (DNS) = the address of a computer NETWORK connected to the Internet
  • re-route = to send along a path different from the original one
  • data center = a building for storing computer equipment safely, with systems for making the air in the rooms cool, protecting against fire, and preventing the equipment from being stolen
  • "packets" = chunks of data sent along the internet when information is requested
  • "blink of an eye" = an expression used to relay how quickly something happens


Protecting The Computer

  • store = (v.) to keep or save items on your computer
  • threat = something that is regarded as a possible danger
  • malware = software that is designed to get into a computer and cause harm to the information there or problems with the way it works
  • viruses, spyware, Trojan Horses = different types of malware
  • Mac = short for "Macintosh;" a type of computer made by the company Apple
  • anti-virus programs = software designed to keep malware from getting into your computer
  • scan = to quickly check the files and software on a computer in order to detect viruses or malware
  • suspicious = feeling that you do not trust someone or something
  • updates = to add the most recent information to something
  • disc clean-up = frees up space on the computer by checking for temporary files that can be deleted
  • disc defragmenter = rearranges the data on the computer to allow it to run faster and more efficiently
  • back up = to store a copy of your files in another location
  • external hard drive = a hard drive that is separate from your main computer
  • online back up service = a company you can pay to store copies of your files online in case your computer becomes damaged
  • "in the cloud" = on the internet

Computer Basics

  • all-in-one computer = a computer that's CPU and monitor are connected in one piece
  • optical disc drive (DVD or CD rom drive)
  • audio ports = small round (green/pink) ports used for headsets
  • USB ports = ports that can be used with a USB cable
  • peripherals = devices that connect to the CPU such as the monitor, keyboard, printer, or speakers
  • Ethernet cable = cord that looks very similar to a phone cable on the end
  • Ethernet port = the port where the Ethernet cable plugs in (this cable connects the computer to the internet)
  • VGA port (DVI or HDMI) = ports used to plug in a monitor
  • graphics card = a memory card that upgrades the computer's video performance
  • PS/2 ports = the round green and purple ports used to connect an older mouse or keyboard
  • serial or parallel ports = ports used for older types of printers and monitors

What is a Computer?

  • manipulate = to use skill in moving or handling something
  • data = information in a form that can be stored and used, especially on a computer
  • hardware = the physical parts of a computer
  • software = any set of instructions that tell the computer what to do
  • personal computer = usually a desktop or laptop computer used by individuals in their homes
  • game consoles = an electronic machine that is used for playing games on a screen
  • servers = these computers "serve" information to other computers on a network and they also store or share files
