Joel was a student and baseball player for Silsbee High School. Joel went on to play college baseball at Panola. Joel and his family loved the game of baseball and after his passing the SHS Baseball Boosters and his former teammates honored Joel by starting the Joel Schooling Memorial Baseball Scholarship.

Each year one Silsbee High School senior is awarded a $1000 scholarship awarded as $500 each semester of his first year of college. The application process includes academic, character and leadership along with an essay that describes to the committee what baseball has meant to them in their lives. The committee is comprised of underclassman baseball parents.
