For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology, alternatively known as FIRST, is a nonprofit organization which inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, FIRST has gone on to provide valuable opportunities to youth across the world. FIRST hosts a variety of programs for a span of grade levels, including FLL (FIRST Lego League), FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge), and FRC (FIRST Robotics Challenge).
FIRST introduced the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) in 1992. Each year, FRC unveils a unique challenge at Kickoff in January, giving teams just eight weeks to collaborate with mentors and work with another to ultimately solve an engineering design problem. Teams are judged based on design, innovation, community impact, and performance. FIRST fosters an environment that encourages innovation, inclusion, discovery, teamwork, impact, and fun!
