1. Read the article Cultural Consulting with Filipinos by Rodolfo R. Barlaan. Notice the difficulties in consulting strategies and explore how to address the difficulties. What difficulties have you encountered in your region?
2. Play the Cross-cultural Consulting Barlaan presentation. Press the space bar to move to thw next slide. What solutions presented here would or would not work in your region? Why?
3. Read the book Ministering cross-culturally: A model for effective personal relationships, Sherwood G. Lingenfelter and Marvin K. Mayers. What were your takeaways from this book?
4. Reread the Barlaan article. For each Filipino value and related workshop problem or difficulty in consulting, think about your experiences in your region and note whatever comes to mind concerning any displayed values and related workshop problems or difficulties in consulting.
5. Think about experiences you have had in consulting or training where you consider conflicting cultural values to be a key to a misunderstanding and write a short paper on one of the experiences using the following questions as a guideline.
What happened?
When did you first notice there might be a misunderstanding?
How did you feel about it then?
What do you think the others felt about it?
What was or should have been a solution to the misunderstanding?
6. Ask a local colleague in you region of work to read your paper and ask him or her to provide you with feedback.
7. Based upon the feedback you got from your colleague, rewrite the paper.
8. Share the paper with your mentor.
Answer the following three questions and review your answers with your mentor.
1. What issues would you face in consulting and training in a cross-cultural setting?
2. What suggestions do you have for improving relationships in a cross-cultural setting?
3. How would create a safe environment for those from minority cultures to express themselves?
