"I believe human beings have undeveloped powers to think, to enjoy, to create, to care for the other fellow. I believe that development of these powers is society’s best chance for its own improvement and that for such development, education is society’s chief tool. Therefore I believe that our schools, in addition to teaching the 3 R’s, should help each boy and each girl according to his individual capacity; to think, enjoy, create, and care. "
Lucy Sprague Mitchell, 1951
I’m so excited to be part of the vibrant Sigsbee Charter School community, where my journey in education joyfully continues!
I was born in Toronto, Canada, and moved to New York with my family at a young age. I had the incredible experience of growing up inside the Brooklyn Museum—what a magical place for a child! I spent my days wandering through galleries filled with ancient Egyptian mummies, artifacts from across the globe, and treasures from throughout history. Those early years sparked my lifelong curiosity about human creativity, culture, and the natural world.
That same sense of wonder has stayed with me throughout my 38-year teaching career. I’ve had the privilege of working with amazing students and families every step of the way, and I continue to be inspired by the curiosity, energy, and joy children bring into the classroom.
I began teaching in New York City, where I spent 10 years at the Bank Street School for Children an Bank Street Graduate School of Education. I earned my BS from SUNY Buffalo and my MS from Bank Street College of Education.
When moving to Key West many years ago, I was fortunate to join the team at Poinciana Elementary, where I spent 17 years as a 5th-grade teacher and Library Media Specialist. I later taught History and worked with Gifted students at Horace O’Bryant School for 6 years, and then transitioned to this wonderful community here at Sigsbee.
Now, I’m thrilled to bring my experience and passion to Sigsbee Charter School as the Interventionist and Gifted Programs Coordinator. I work with students in kindergarten through 8th grade—supporting them in areas where they may need a little extra help, and providing enrichment opportunities to challenge and excite them.
Every day is a new opportunity to explore, play, and learn together. I can’t wait to grow alongside your children and help them discover their unique strengths and passions!
I love to travel the country and world.
My daughter has grown up a lot since then.
I love all things tasty, including a good book!
