8th Grade ELA

Mrs. Frickson

Rigorous - Relevant - Rewarding

Welcome to 8th Grade ELA! This is the culmination of your primary-middle school education and final preparation for high school. We have a lot to do, and we will do it well together. We will study rural, urban, historical, and contemporary texts. We will expand your analytical and research-based writing repertoire.

While the 8th Grade curricula has specific requirements around writing, reading, analyzing, and researching, 8th Grade students are also given freedom to choose texts and research topics. Ownership is an important part of student growth, and this agency will serve students well in high school. By the end of the year, every student will be equipped for high school, both in academics and in attitude.

About Your Teacher

Hello! My name is Keilah (Ky-la) Frickson. I am passionate about learning and growing. I enjoy reading, traveling, exploring, and trying new things. I also love helping others grow and find their unique passions.

Here's a little overview of my background. I grew up near Minneapolis, Minnesota; went to college in Iowa (B.A. Literature); worked with teens and in Human Resources in Ohio; and then earned my Masters Degree in Applied Rhetoric from St. Cloud State University in 2005.

My first teaching job was at Leeward Community College in Pearl City, HI. Next, I moved to Eagle River, AK, and taught at University of Alaska Anchorage. From there, I moved to Eagle River, WI, with my family, where we ran a resort. Even though I wasn't a "teacher" at our resort, I did develop an internship program that allowed our employees to earn college credit while learning in their jobs with us. In 2019, we sold our resort and moved to Key West. I am thrilled to be living by the ocean and teaching at Sigsbee Charter School!
