5th Math - Math Curriculum

📐 Welcome to Amplify Desmos Math!

This year, our class is using Amplify Desmos Math, a dynamic program designed to help students learn to love math by doing math.

Instead of just memorizing rules, students work together to solve interesting problems, share their thinking, and learn from mistakes in a supportive environment.

What to Expect:

Interactive Learning: We combine digital activities, write-in workbooks, and hands-on math games (Centers).
Deep Understanding: Lessons focus on explaining why math works, not just how to get the right answer.
Collaboration: Students frequently discuss ideas and learn from each other's unique problem-solving strategies.

Unit 1: Volume, Factors, and Expressions
- Focus: Understanding 3D spatial properties. Students dive into unit cubes, layered structural tracking of rectangular prisms, and compounding distinct block figures to find complete mathematical volume.
Unit 2: Fractions as Quotients and Fraction Multiplication
- Focus: Expanding understanding of equal-sharing division scenarios and building models (like paper-folding or area models) to multiply unit fractions, non-unit fractions, and mixed numbers.
Unit 3: Multi-Digit Multiplication, Division, and Financial Literacy
- Focus: Refining computation speed and proficiency using the standard algorithm, exploring area models/partial products, handling long division, and breaking down multi-step real-world personal finance scenarios.
Unit 4: Place Value Patterns and Decimal Operations
- Focus: Shifting numbers from whole numbers into the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places. Students learn how shifting decimal points scales numeric value and practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing precise decimals.
Unit 5: Measurement, Fraction Operations, and Data
- Focus: Combining fractions with unlike denominators using common factors. Students apply these skills to convert fractional standard and metric systems measurements while plotting data findings.
Unit 6: Geometry and Algebraic Reasoning
- Focus: Categorizing polygons based on line properties and coordinate geometry. Students construct basic coordinate graphs to map algebraic number patterns, solve numeric order-of-operation puzzles, and reason through shapes.
