Form Six Application
MATHEMATICS & COMPUTER SCIENCE
Head of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, Ms. Roberts and her team have set clear targets, that are geared to ensuring the success of their students.
⭐️ VISION STATEMENT ⭐️
To be the premier department for the provision of Mathematical teaching and learning, that will instil in students the ability to reason, think and analyse logically and critically, thus making decisions that will enable them to succeed in a changing global environment.
⭐️ ACHIEVEMENTS ⭐️
🟢 The Mathematics and Computer Science Department consists of hardworking, dedicated, and resourceful teachers. This tremendous dedication from teachers, parents, students, administration and ancillary staff has propelled and catapulted our increased pass rates over the period 2010 to 2020, where we have captured data.
🟢 Additional Mathematics has seen an increase of approximately of 274% in the year 2017 over the corresponding period, for the year 2013. Additionally, in 2017 we surpassed the CSEC regional average pass rate of 69%, where our students gained a pass rate of 71%. In this current year 2020, we gained our highest % average pass rate of 82%, for the period 2013 to 2020.
🟢 CSEC Mathematics showed a 62% increase in 2018 over 2010 results. CSEC’s regional average in 2018 was 49%, whereas our students’ average pass rate was 48%. However, in 2019 CSEC’s regional average % pass rate was 46% and our students surpassed this %, where they gained 48%.
🟢 CSEC Information Technology gained its highest past rate of 95% in this year 2020, over the period 2010 to 2020. The average pass rate over the last 10 years was 69%.
🟢 CAPE Computer Science Unit 1 has consistently gained 100% over the last six (6) years, whereas Computer Science Unit II has an average pass rate of 91%.
CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit I, in 2019, surpassed the CXC regional average of 74.5% pass rate, where our students’ pass rate was 76%. Our highest pass rate was 92% for Unit I was in 2016, over the period 2010 to 2020. Pure Mathematics Unit II had a 100 % pass rate in 2017 and has an average pass rate of 73%.
🟢 For Signal Hill Secondary School’s Achievement Day, our Department usually has a booth, where students eagerly take part in our Treasure Hunt. This involves, measurement (distance) and cardinal directions (Vector Quantities). Critical thinking questions, probability questions, volume questions and programming etc. are also given to students, so that they can see and use mathematics in their environment. This is another achievement in getting students to appreciate the value of Mathematics around them.
🟢 Anesha Crooks, one of our past students, was able to reach the 2nd round in the Maths Olympiad. That achievement brought great joy and pride to our school. Anesha is now studying Optometry, where she said her foundation in Mathematics from school, has placed her in good stead to be successful in her mathematics courses at University, and to assist her peers who were having difficulties with their mathematics courses. Miss Crooks is just one of the many success stories of how Mathematics helped students to be successful in their lives, and various career paths. We have produced entrepreneurs, trades men, chefs, teachers, doctors etc. Mathematics is everywhere around us.
