There are a number of changes being implemented this year. Please read through all of the following.
First, I will not be sending an email out only to those who have met the requirements. This is for a couple reasons. The application process is going to start Monday, Dec 1st. All materials are due to the NHS Dropbox or to Mrs. Flannigan in the office by the end of the day Friday, Dec. 19th. The requirements to apply are 1) be a Junior or Senior and 2) have a GPA of 3.70 or above. This will include this current fall semester. So, I won't know who is eligible until after everything is turned in. My recommendation; take a chance, apply, stay on top of your grades, and hope for the best.
Second, there are three parts of the application process that you need to fill out. Their descriptions are here, but you can pick up physical copies in the office.
1. Teacher Recommendations
Ask four of your teachers if they would be willing to write a short recommendation on your behalf. These recommendations will focus on your Character and Leadership qualities in the classroom. Once a teacher agrees, give them one of the half sheets in your packet. They will need to fill it out and turn it into the NHS Dropbox in the teacher’s lounge.
2. Pillar Inventory
Fill this form completely. The NHS selection committee seeks well-rounded individuals. For selection into NHS, you need to show the four pillars in your daily life both within and outside the school community. This form is the best way for you to show those qualities. Make sure to include as much information as possible; do not be modest, but do not stretch the truth either. Make sure that a parent/guardian signs the form. It will not be accepted without a signature.
3. NHS Pillar Essay
Select one of the NHS Pillars–Scholarship, Character, Leadership, Service. Describe what that pillar means to you and how you exemplify it in your daily life. Essays should be no longer than a page, no larger than size 12 font, and either double or 1.5 spaced. You do not need to print your essay. Include your name in the top right hand corner. When you are finished email Mr. Chockley with your essay as either a Word doc. or share via Google docs.
Deadline: All parts of the application must be completed and submitted to Mr. Chockley and/or Mrs. Flannigan before the end of the day on Friday, December 19th
Once everything has been submitted, the NHS Selection Committee will discuss your application as well as a survey given to all RIHS Faculty and staff. After the committee has made their decision, Mr. Chockley will send an email with the results.
