Upon submission, each manuscript is checked to ensure that it adheres to ICB's submission standards.
The manuscript is then assigned to an associate and an assistant editor, who will oversee the peer review process.
Peer reviewers are requested to complete peer reviews within three weeks. Editors are requested to complete editorial recommendations and decisions within two weeks. Editors may overrule peer reviewer recommendations.
Author are allowed six weeks for revisions and may request extensions as needed by contacting ICB's managing editor or by replying to reminder emails from the managing editor.

ICB publishes invited manuscripts. Invited manuscripts resulting from SICB symposia may require only one round of external peer review, with further rounds of revision handled by the editorial board, including ICB's editorial reviewers.
ICB publishes invited manuscripts. Most of ICB manuscript originate from the annual meetings of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology SICB, such as symposia and their complementary sessions, winners of best student presentations, and annual SICB awards. ICB also invites special issues in collaboration with members of our scientific community and other professional organizations.
By publishing only invited manuscripts, ICB is able to assign editors and editorial reviewers to manuscripts before manuscripts are submitted to speed up the editorial process.
