In this summer service project, students will learn how to be socially aware agents of change. In alignment with the Apostolic desire for the next generation to maintain a hope-filled eye on the future, students will follow in the footsteps of St. Philippine Duchesne by carrying out the Sacred Heart mission through hands-on service with organizations within the St. Louis community. Students will gain a strengthened appreciation for the gift of food accessibility and affordability, as well as work towards addressing some of the social and environmental injustices that contribute to issues surrounding food insecurity.

CODING CAMP IN HOUSTON

Through a variety of daily workshops, this program will help the next generation contribute a positive technological footprint by teaching students how to code Sphero robots. Additionally, students will have the unique opportunity to visit the Space Center in Houston to learn more about the use of robotic technology in space exploration. At the end of the coding program, students will not only be able to use block coding to program a robot to perform a variety of tasks, but students will also possess the skills to plan, execute, and evaluate different plans for future coding workshops.

In this rare opportunity to truly stop and smell the roses, students will be gifted with the chance to engage in hands-on activities centered around learning and applying sustainability practices (i.e., recycling, urban gardening, healthy eating, and energy efficiency) to their daily lives. Participants in this program will hopefully walk away from the project with an enhanced understanding of the significance behind leaving a sustainable environmental footprint as a means to ensure a greener future for all of God’s creatures.

Through this summer service project, students will meet with those who work with or have lived the experience of crossing new frontiers. Students will hopefully walk away from this project with the ability to understand the difficulties in both logistically immigrating to and assimilating within the United States. Additionally, participants will learn how to identify ways in which students themselves can help facilitate atmospheres of support for new members traveling to the students’ communities.

This project will focus on helping students form an intentional community of service-learning. Through a variety of direct service engagements and site visits, students will learn about the economic hardships, food insecurity, and water concerns affecting families within the unique cultural communities of New Orleans. Students participating in the project will be encouraged to share the gifts of a Sacred Heart education as they navigate the biodiversity of southern Louisiana and experience the complexity of NOLA.

In the spirit of Goal III, this summer service project aims to bring faith into action through an exploration behind the traditional teachings of the Church and how such teachings influence contemporary Catholic liberation theology. Specifically, students will have the opportunity to work with leaders of faith-based organizations—geared towards relieving some of the hardships that burden individuals within under-resourced and marginalized communities—as well as engage in firsthand service experience by providing assistance to those in need throughout New York City.

DUCHESNE ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART - OMAHA, NE

During this project, students will actively carry out care for our common home and solidarity with our fellow community members through a variety of service opportunities. In particular, students will take part in volunteering at food pantries, community gardens, and homeless shelters while also having the chance to learn about floral design techniques through unique Sacred Heart-centered site visits throughout Omaha. The hope is that students are able to pursue each of the corporal works of mercy to a greater extent and embody a heightened awareness of the everyday needs of those around them.

In this project, students will not only have the opportunity to learn about the cultural heritage of Indigenous communities throughout the Puget Sound that is deeply rooted in respect for natural surroundings, but students will also engage in various activities that promote direct service for environmental justice. The hope is that during the duration of the program, participants will become socially aware individuals with a reinforced dedication to being stewards of environmental justice and integrity of creation.

This program provides students with the chance to meet with a variety of individuals working within the juvenile justice system (i.e., judges, prosecutors, public defenders, social workers, and adolescents) in Illinois. Participants will learn how the state of Illinois operates its criminal justice system with a diverse population of our nation’s adolescents. The hope for students who participate in this project is that they leave the program with a sense of motivation to be engaged citizens, comprehend the value in social justice through Catholic Social Teaching, and embody an openness to new information and growth in critical thinking.

This project provides students with an occasion to truly experience the significance behind the tenets of Goal III that encourages students to commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels to action. For 55 years, St. Madeleine Sophie's Center (SMSC) has been serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The center focuses on the adults' abilities, not their disabilities, to help them realize their full potential. SMSC combines our culture of care and creativity within quality programs to provide liberal arts education, practical skills development, employment, and dignity for a lifetime. Specifically, students will actively learn about the injustices people with disabilities face, and actively provide service to those with disabilities by engaging in a variety of daily activities that seek to address occupational and leisure needs.
