Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome back to school! My name is Mrs. Dana Patane and we will be your child’s 6th grade teacher this year. It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to the sixth grade and to the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new year. Together, we will be embarking on a new voyage. To ensure that the upcoming year is productive and pleasant we would like to share with you a few policies, procedures and expectations.
MATH Classroom Expectations
1.Be Prepared - Students are expected to have the proper class materials every day. The following items are needed for math class:
Math notebook OR a 1-inch Math binder
A two-pocket folder
Homework
sharpened pencils with an eraser, Highlighter
i-Ready workbook
calculator (simple function)
Fully Charged Chromebook
2.Be on Time - Lateness is unacceptable. Students are expected to be in their seats when the bell rings. Lateness will only be excused with a signed pass.
3.Classwork/Homework - All students are expected to hand in their classwork and homework in a timely manner. Any classwork that is not finished during the day must be completed for homework and brought in the next day. This way your child will not fall behind. Homework goes hand in hand with classwork. Homework is an integral part of learning – it allows students the opportunity to make the most of their experience in school. Homework reinforces what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. Homework will be given every night. The assignment will be written on the board and should be copied everyday in your Agenda Book. Assignments will also be posted on Google Classroom. Assignments are due the next day unless otherwise stated. Homework should be neat and all work must be shown. Homework will be checked every day and is part of your quarterly grade.
4.Absences - Students are required to make up any work they miss when
absent. Please ask a classmate for the missed work or check Google Classroom.
5.Tests and Quizzes - Tests or quizzes can be given weekly. Students will be given ample notice for any tests. Students who are absent for tests are expected to take them as soon as they return. Test and quiz grades will be posted to Infinite Campus through the parent portal.
6.Grading - your quarter grade is based on test, quiz, and cumulative review grades, homework completion, class participation and attendance. The grading policy is as follows: Tests/Quizzes: 60%, Cumulative Reviews: 15%, Homework/Class Participation/Attendance: 25%
7. Class Conduct - Students are expected to act in a respectful manner toward each other and their teacher in the classroom.
Science Expectations
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome back to school! It is our pleasure to welcome you and your child to a year full of exploring and learning together as we embark on our journey into 6th Grade science. This year we will cover four major topics including Earth’s atmosphere, engineering, energy, and cells. To ensure that the upcoming year is productive and pleasant we would like to share with you a few policies, procedures and expectations.
Materials
Be prepared with materials for class each day. The following materials will be needed for science each day:
Two-pocket folder
Notebook or 1-inch binder
Charged Chromebook
Sharpened pencil(s)
Agenda
Homework assignment(s)
Homework/Classwork/Labs
Classwork and homework is expected to be completed to the best of the student's ability. Missed assignments due to absences from class need to be made up. (including excused absences due to lessons, related services, etc.) It is important to check Google Classroom daily to stay up to date on assignments.
Homework is due the following class, unless otherwise noted.
Labs are completed in class, however sometimes include a follow-up assignment that may need to be completed for homework. Since labs are part of the quarter grade it is important that they are turned in within a timely manner. We will review lab safety in class and all students are expected to follow these safety guidelines when conducting a lab in class.
Assessments/Grading
An assessment or project will be given at the end of each unit. All assessments will be announced in advance to allow ample time to study. Quizzes will be given periodically throughout the units.
Quarter grades will consist of assessments, projects/labs, participation, and classwork/homework.
Breakdown of quarter grade is as follows:
Assessments - 35%
Classwork/Homework - 25%
Projects/Labs - 30%
Participation - 10%
Class Conduct
In the classroom, students are expected to be safe, respectful to others and responsible.
On lab days, it is extremely important to listen carefully to directions in order to ensure all students are practicing lab safety.
STEAM Fair
All students will be expected to complete a project for the STEAM fair. We will spend some time in class discussing the scientific method as well as what is expected for their projects. Students will receive ample notice when it is time to begin working on their projects and support will be given before, during, and after school, as needed. More information will be forthcoming.
