Resource Room

Course Description:

The primary focus of this program is to provide students with learning strategies, study techniques, organizational and social/emotional skills that address IEP objectives. Students also utilize the resource room for testing accommodations and to receive/review, reinforcement, and re- teaching of content area concepts. The overall goal of resource room is to offer students the tools required to become independent and self- directed learners.

Anticipated student outcomes:

By June of this year, students in this class should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:


Walt Whitman High School 

Content area textbooks, agenda pads, independent student work folder, technology, skill building workbooks, manipulatives, visuals, and graphic organizers.


Materials required or used:

Reinforcing Classroom Materials:
1. Help students understand class requirements                                           2. Pre-teach and Re-teach material
3. Develop graphic organizers
4. Practice or enrichment
5. Develop study guides   6. Adapt or modify class work           7. Highlight texts/reading material           8. Write or Rewrite Worksheets

Adapting/Modifying Classroom Content

1. Adapt or modify tests
2. Change how tests are given
3. Clarify vocabulary and directions 
4. Modify Content (when required)   5. Develop skills for using educational technology           6. Design alternative activities


Assist students in understanding their learning style, strengths and weaknesses to access learning in all students.

1. Help students understand the information in the I.E.P.’s regarding accommodations, modifications and annual goals.

2. Encourage students to be self-advocates.




RESOURCE ROOM PROCEDURES

A. WHAT YOU NEED EVERY DAY:

Pen, pencil, notebook, calculator.

Your notebooks and textbooks from your other classes (especially the classes in which you are having difficulty).

Daily Agenda Pad with all assignments written, every day.


B. WHAT I EXPECT OF YOU:

Respectful behavior at all times.

To be on time for classes. Class begins when the bell rings. The bell does not dismiss

the class; the teacher does.

No going to lockers for forgotten items.

4. Appropriate behavior for a substitute.

5. Bathroom passes issued for emergency use only.

6. No passes to use the telephone-emergencies only.


C. HOW I CAN HELP YOU:

Study with you for tests (including Regents, RCT's, SAT's etc.)

Review and help you fill in and organize class notes.

Read difficult material with you or to you.

Administer tests to you, according to your test accommodations.

Advocate for you with your classroom teachers and/or administrators.
Teach you to advocate successfully for yourself.

Help you understand your own learning style, strengths and weaknesses.

Help you improve your basic reading, spelling, writing, and math skills.

Teach you learning and study tactics that will help you become a better, more independent, successful student.

Address goals as indicated on IEP

Assist with difficult homework assignments

Bring your materials to Resource Room every dav.
