Welcome to Silas Wood 6th Grade Center. I am delighted to have your child in my class this year and look forward to working cooperatively with both you and your child. Education has the potential to be a life-changing experience. This year your child will be challenged to discover, connect and grow in preparation for future opportunities and challenges. Therefore, as the teacher, I will always endeavor to create an educational environment that will foster courage, community, perseverance, and passion for knowledge.
The 6th grade social studies curriculum is very interesting at the same time challenging. This year we will be learning about ancient civilizations located in the eastern hemisphere. Since a lot of the curriculum is new to the students, research and research writing will be necessary components of the learning process. The grading policy is 30% for tests, 30% for writing, 20% for projects and 20% for classwork/homework/participation.
The 6th grade science curriculum full of exploration and discovery! There are four major topics including Earth’s atmosphere, engineering, energy, and cells. The grading policy is 35% for tests, 30% for projects/labs and 25% for classwork/homework/participation and 10% participation.
The 6th grade English Skills curriculum is where each child has an opportunity to work on and master skills tailored to their individual needs. I will provide time for enrichment or to work in small groups for remediation, whatever is necessary. This is a pass/fail class, so participation is mandatory!
We are all expected to work independently and collaboratively. It is imperative that your child acts in a safe, respectful and responsible manner. The grading policy for Math Skills is pass/fail class, since the class is tailored to your child’s individual needs. The expectation is your child will be respectful, work hard and be cooperative/collaborative with all as there will be no homework or tests.
Again, I look forward to a fantastic year working with both you and your child. If you need to reach me, please email me at gbullock@shufsd.org or via Parent Square.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bullock
