In 2009, the Wildcat Booster Club charged the Athletic Department to develop with developing a Hall of Fame that would recognize former Walt Whitman and South Huntington HS athletes for their accomplishments on the fields and in the gymnasiums. A committee was formed that consisted of coaches and members of the community who had knowledge of the long past and a good connect with the recent past. The inaugural class named seven athletes and one championship team who made the greatest impact in the minds of the committee at that time. As with any Hall of Fame, there is bound to be former players and teams that are overlooked. With that in mind we ask you all to consider nominating a former athlete for recognition. The First Inductee Class included legendary coach and teacher, Frank Gugliotta whose name adorns the North Gym, Patrice Felder, Thrower extraordinaire who set NYS records in the shot put and discus, Sal Lanuto, our first State Wrestling Champion, Rich Cariddi, coach and Physical Education teacher that led three teams to championships, Gerald Filardi, a three-time All-Long Island linebacker who was the first freshman to start at Penn State leading to s stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bob Young, who from 1966-1981 served as the first Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, Alex Agudio, arguably the best basketball player in the history of Suffolk County and named Mr. Basketball by NYS, and the 1979 Cross Country team whose accomplishments are unmatched in the running world with six of the seven runners earning All-American status and continues to hold records as this group ran to three State Championships.
