Reading Intervention at Plains School

We are available to help and support!

During this challenging time when students are out of school, we share these websites and links as ideas to keep children engaged, entertained and learning! We are missing our students and so wish we could be at school teaching them. We will be checking our email on a regular basis so please feel free to reach out to Plains Reading Specialists Taryn LaRaja at tlaraja@shschools.com or Dee McWilliams dmcwilliams@shschools.com with any questions or for more specific ideas and support for your child.

We are eager to begin teaching again! Please email your child's reading teacher to set up a remote lesson. We will figure out a time and way that works!

Read together

Keep reading aloud to and with your child. Hearing and talking about stories they can not yet read independently helps children develop more sophisticated language skills and supports a deepening understanding of more involved story plots.

Write together

In addition to story writing and journal keeping there are other writing projects you can do with your child. To make writing practical and engaging try having your child make write letters to school friends, make to-do lists, make posters with house/room/toy rules. Kids don't always like to follow rules, but they sure do love to make them!

Tell stories together

Telling a story from your childhood, making up a story or retelling an old favorite and inviting your child to do the same are great ways to engage in rich oral language experiences. Try retelling a familiar fairy tale or folk tale with a new twist. Car rides, walks outside and bedtime are good times to tell stories!

Become a word collector! Here are some ideas for getting started on making a word collection.

Play the game "What's Missing?" This is a fun way to learn sight words. After watching this video (with the words like and here) play the game using other sight words your child is learning.

The choices range from levels A-K. Text levels A-C are typically appropriate for beginning readers in kindergarten through early first grade. Levels D-F are typically appropriate for early first grade, and level K is typically appropriate for end of first grade.

Discover poetry!

Some poets use rhyme to compose playful or funny poems. Other poets use beautiful language to express ideas and feelings. Try reading a poem to your child. Read it again and ask your child to imagine or act out the poem. Try reading it together. If you can print out the poem have your child illustrate it or simply draw a picture to show what is happening in the poem. Read it again together!
