Class overview
In 6th grade English Language Arts, our objective is to grow as readers and writers. We read a variety of works throughout the year and learn the elements of different types of writing that need to be present to make that style of writing successful. We practice writing with a variety of writing assignments and work on editing our own work and giving helpful peer feedback. We learn to draw evidence from texts, summarize objectively, identify central ideas or themes, and explain how details help develop big ideas. It's an exciting year, full of growth, challenge, and fun.

I'm Krista Boos. I have been an educator for many years, and this is my 4th year teaching at Seven Hills Preparatory Academy. I have 4 boys whom I homeschooled for nearly 20 years, and I taught classes to other homeschoolers for many of those years. My twins are SHPA graduates; we all love it here, so when the opportunity came for me to be a classroom teacher here, I jumped at it.
When I'm not teaching, I love to read, write, knit, and spend time with my family and friends. I am excited to be here and grateful to have this opportunity to work with your student.
How to help your 6th Graders succeed:
Make sure they have the correct supplies:
2, 3" Binders: one for morning classes and one for the afternoon. Some students choose 1 large "trapper" type binder that they use for all classes, but we find that these make organization a problem.
12 Dividers: The plastic ones with pockets are by far the best and will last all year.
Pencil Pouch: ideally, ones that fit right into the binders.
Pencils (buy a ton as they go through them...and lose them, and break them, and share them...)
Highlighters: Yellow, Pink, Blue, and Green
You do NOT need a notebook for my class
Help them organize their binders at every school break.
They will have homework every single night. Make sure they do it. Missing work is a huge challenge for 6th graders.
