Loaves & Fishes | Update

Our next Loaves & Fishes meal service is now scheduled for Wednesday, March 27. SMD volunteers will provide a sign-up link and details about meal theme and requested dishes on this website and via email when they become available.

In the meantime, we hope the following may help answer a few questions:

Where does the service happen?

The Loaves & Fishes dining room and kitchen are currently located in the basement of Wilkes Blvd. United Methodist Church. Park in the back lot, and enter via the outdoor stairs down to the kitchen door.

There are still plans to move the meal services to a new location after March, 2024. The City has yet to confirm a new location, but there is hope that services can continue at the new Room at the Inn, which opened a year-round shelter in Ashely Center in late 2023.

What do you need?

In general, we need assistance with everything from food preparation to service and cleanup. You can choose to simply drop food off in the kitchen at 3 p.m. Or, you can stay on to pitch in with a variety of tasks.

How do I sign up?

SMD will signup link here as soon as it's available. If you are on our mailing list, you will also receive an announcement.

What kind of work do volunteers do?

We offer a hot meal to those in need. As an example, SMD volunteers served chili, sides and more to approximately 150 men, women and children in need of a hot meal at the most recent service, on January 24, 2024.

Volunteers prepared ten servings of chili each and brought sides, salad and deserts. Several people helped serve the meal and a handful stayed on afterward to scrub the dishes and pots, clean the dining room, wipe down tables and counters, and take out garbage.

You are invited to volunteer for any of these tasks, but we will likely have the greatest need for volunteers to prepare dishes and  help with clean-up.

Thank you for your patience as we await more details! Be happy.
