Valentine’s Day
Margaret E.
This month, as I assume you already know, is February. Valentine's Day is a holiday in February! You are probably at least kind-of excited about this holiday—in school there are treats and cards and bag making. But what if you don’t know what to do at home for Valentine's Day? Well here are a few great ideas for you to consider-maybe you’ll do it or suggest it to your family!
One great idea is one my family’s doing—everyone has an important part. First, you buy a little treat (it can be a toy, candy, a little game like mini janga, e.c.t) for everyone in your family. My family made a rule where you cannot buy something that’s more than $5—it’s a good way to save money, but you don’t have to do it. Then, at dinner, everyone has something to cook. You make a bunch of tiny pieces of paper, and each of them has a part of an average dinner—maybe you could do appetizer, main meal, side dish, and dessert. You fold the papers so they remain unseen, put them in a hat, shuffle them and everyone picks one. If you pick the main meal you make the main meal. If you get dessert you make dessert. It’s super fun and a great way to celebrate this holiday!
Another thing you can do is something like we do for school— but different. Start by cutting as many hearts that there are in your family. Color them in whatever color(s) or cut them out of colored construction paper. When you’re done making the hearts, glue them onto paper bags. Put treats in the paper bags (you can skip this part) depending on who you want to give it to—if your mom loves chocolate, then give her chocolate. If your sibling likes jolly ranchers, give them jolly ranchers. Put them on the correct places at the dinner table—the one you put chocolate in for your mom put them on your mom’s seat; the one with jolly ranchers put at your sibling's seat. If you did not do it specifically for each member of your family, just place them at random places. Then make more hearts—same thing, as many hearts that there are people in your family. Write your family’s names on them and fold them. Place them on their spot on the dinner table. It looks cute and fun; everyone gets something special!
The last idea I’ll give you is this game. Everyone goes to the living room and sits down. Place a bowl in the center of you all. The bowl will have people’s names of your family on them. Shuffle and fold the cards and everyone takes turns. When it is your turn, take a card. Say 3 things about the person you picked:
Why you love them/why you are grateful for them
Why they are important and why they are kind
Something silly about them—but not something silly in a mean way (this one should make everyone laugh!)
Have fun and everyone gets a turn!
Well, those are three great ideas for Valentine’s Day themed things. I didn’t Google them, trust me—reading this article means something, not something you can look up on Google yourself! Note you can do any of these and modify them in any way you want—take out something or add something, it’s totally up to you! Just whatever you chose to do or chose to do none of these, have a great Valentine’s Day, Lake Bluff!
