Hispanic Heritage

Hispanic heritage month is celebrated every year in the US from September 15-October 15. Even though it is over, it’s not too late to learn about Hispanic heritage.
But….what is Hispanic heritage month? It’s a time when people in the US celebrate Hispanic culture. Hispanic people are people from Spain, Mexico, and Spanish-speaking countries in Central and South America.
Some foods that people commonly eat in Hispanic countries are tortilla and potatoes. In fact, people in Peru eat a dish made of potatoes called chuño. Basically, chuño is made of freeze-dried potatoes.
In Hispanic culture, some holidays are Navidad and Dia de los muertos. Navidad is what spanish-speaking people call Christmas, and Dia de los muertos (also known as Day of the Dead) is a celebration in Mexico. People dress up as skeletons and honor their family members who have died. They also make altars and decorate them with things the people in their family who died loved.
A famous woman from Mexico is Frida Kahlo. At age eighteen, she had an accident. She was stuck in bed, and she decided to paint something. Sometimes she painted self-portraits. She married an artist named Diego Rivera. She loved to paint, and was a talented artist. Her paintings are very famous.
Maybe next time Hispanic Heritage month comes, you’ll think about this information, and learn even more about Hispanic culture.
