Technology and Online Supports
Talking Points: app or web-based and free. This enables you to send translated messages to parents. You type one message in English and it goes out in multiple languages! There is a bit of work on the front end to input information.
Google Translate: GET IT!! It is relatively easy to use. You can speak on your phone, type in a word or phrase, or hover over text to translate into the student's home language.
Closed captioning: consider using closed caption when lecturing with notes in class if using Google Slides.
Supporting Students from Immigrant Families (from Teaching Tolerance): loads of resources all together!
Britannica, Explora & Worldbook Online: all offer translated articles at various levels and the latter two are available at each school library/media website. Click on the school name to get the link: Atwater, Lake Bluff, SIS, and SHS
CommonLit for reading supports translations in many languages
Smithsonian articles for k-12: you can change the Lexile range for the articles. The articles are available in English and Spanish only.
Kids National Geographic Just Joking: consider beginning the day or a lesson with a joke. Like many students, MLs will tune into a joke, and these jokes are in video format.
We Need Diverse Books!: consider checking out this website when you purchase books for wonderful suggestions.
Unite for Literacy: This website has fiction and nonfiction picture books in several languages ready for you to project for your class or have children read on their own.
Free Kids Books: so many books! There is a foreign language section.
America in Class: lesson plans, videos, webinars, primary and secondary resources
Voice of America: videos to teach about US government, short & simple!
Math Instruction for English Language Learners: an article with great tips, followed by a list of online resources
Newcomer Toolkit: Welcoming Newcomers, Teaching Newcomers, Supporting Newcomers Social Emotional Needs, Partnerships with Families
WISE Learn: resources to support all curricular areas, all grades with standards and ideas for ML!
PBS Learning Media: lesson plans, videos, search by grade, curricular area, or standards - so much to explore!
Magic Foldable Books - how-to video: these books are just plain fun and could be used for vocabulary and more!
