Eureka Math
By Gilbert
Eureka Math is our new math curriculum that we’re learning at Lake Bluff Elementary. Eureka Math was created in New York State by Great MInds. Eureka math was made from Great Minds Winning a contract With New York Education Department to create Eureka Math. Eureka Math was made in 2006, the Production companies that worked to make it are Universal Cable Productions, Universal Media Productions, and Universal Television Studio. Eureka Math was created because students built enduring math knowledge. Louisiana State University is where Eureka Math was created.
I like Eureka Math curriculum because the books make it a lot easier than collecting papers and putting them in a folder all the time. When we get in class Mr. Peterka puts a math equation on the board then we have to solve it. Then after we solve it on our white boards Mr. Peterka asks for the answer when he says “yes” then we know were right but when he says “mmmm not quite” then we know we're wrong. After we find out were wrong Mr. Peterka goes over it with us. When we’re done with that we do the discover problem sets Mr. Peterka goes over some of the problems with us.
Then when we’re done with those we do the gear problems by ourselves. We do the exit ticket the class is over and that's math class unless something different happens. Noah says that he likes that the homework sheet gives you examples on how to do the homework. He also says he likes that exit tickets are shorter and easier than the original learning problems. What Noah doesn't like about the new Eureka math curriculum is that we have to learn a whole bunch of different methods of whatever we’re doing for class. Also he says we’re forced to do all the methods of whatever we’re doing in class.
Mimi says that she likes that we get more space to do our work than the old math sponsor. She dislikes that there are way more problems than last year's math sponsor. Helen says, “It's better than Everyday Math because I like this type of math better. Sometimes it's hard though.”
Mr. Elliott says that his job at the school is to help students understand math and he says that he was part of the team that helped choose Eureka Math. Also he says "Eureka" is something say when you discover when you're excited about something. Eureka was developed by teachers and its the second version of Eureka math. The teachers had to test the curriculum to see what they could and couldn’t use.
Mr. Elliott suggests it because it helps students develop number sense and a deeper understanding of math. Mr. Elliott says the Apply book gives a students a chance to show what they know and to apply what they have learned. Mr. Elliott likes how it builds, from year to year, also it gets students to discuss and explain their thinking with each other.
