Do you like words? Have you ever wondered if new words are added to the dictionary? Well, there are many words added each year. I am going to explain how words are added to the dictionary, who puts new words in the dictionary, and why.
What words were added to the dictionary? Well, there have been many words added this year, there were 690 words added to the dictionary. One of them was antigram. The definition of antigram is an anagram that has an opposite or contradictory meaning to the original word or phrase. It basically means the opposite of what the thing is. An example of an antigram is funeral. If you rearrange it says real fun. Which is kind of mind blowing.
Now let's get someone's opinion on the word antigram. Lets go to an interview with Noah.
“Noah, what do you think about the word antigram being added to the dictionary?” I asked.
“I think it should be in an advanced dictionary because it is a hard word,” Noah replied. Thanks to Noah for that interview.
But, you may ask, Carter, why are there new words added to the dictionary? Well, because then people can look up the definition and know the words instead of being a big unknown. Also, there are words that go out of the dictionary because people don't use them anymore.
Who puts new words in the dictionary? The people who put new words in the dictionary are classified as lexicographers. Lexicographers are super intelligent people and are also very talented.
Next, the way they put new words is, they make sure people use the word and it won't disappear in the next couple years. Then, they make a database and make a definition. Then the dictionary editors confirm that the lexicographers are correct about the word staying around. Then they put it in the dictionary.
All in all, new words being added to the dictionary is very important and I feel that the process is very cool and interesting.
