Rick Kurland's most recent company, Employment Background Investigations, Inc. (EBI) was created in 1994 shortly after Mr. Kurland viewed and empathized with a national media storyline pertaining to nursing home abuse. EBI was one of the 10 largest employment screening firms nationally, was the largest independently- owned screening firm nationally, and was ranked #1 by their clients and competitors in North America. Mr. Kurland is a founding member of the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA). Along with a few of PBSA’s early innovators, Mr. Kurland was instrumental in creating the privatization and security protocols of the background screening industry as it exists today. Always one step ahead, EBI was additionally ISO 27001:2005 certified – the highest certification for data security. EBI was the only PBSA- accredited background screening firm in the world to hold an ISO 27001 certification. At 14, he started his first formal company, String Along With Me, a racket stringing business. While attending college, he started The Wrestling Ring which shortly grew to the largest professional wrestling mail- order business in the country – even outselling the WWF (now WWE) in merchandise sales. Community and family are important to Mr. Kurland. In 2017, he and his wife Marti established the Just One World Foundation, a 501 (c3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting business, educational and medical innovation with an emphasis on novel ideas and life-changing initiatives. Most recently, the Kurlands created the K-EBI (Kurland Entrepreneurial Business Incubator) at Shorecrest Preparatory School under the RRI (Ross Roeder Institute).
