SPRING HILL PRIMARY LIBRARY
“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall.”
Roald Dahl
Sherry Phillips (librarian assistant extraordinaire) and I (Jena Wayt, librarian) are excited to work with your children to help them learn to love to read. This year will be a new adventure in the library as we learn to work within our safety guidelines to help keep all students as healthy as possible. Please feel free to contact Sherry or me with any questions you might have.

What is AR?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that SH uses in grades 1-5, to help students strengthen their reading skills. Twice a year, the students take a computerized test (Star), that lets the teachers know what level the student is reading on. This level, known as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), is what the students use to find books in the library on their level. They read these books and take AR tests over them to make sure that they are comprehending what they are reading, and they also earn points on the tests that they take. Teachers set goals for how many points a student should get as well as what their test average should be for each marking period. When the students demonstrate mastery on a level, the teacher can increase their ZPD so that they will have more challenging books to read. The goal of using this program is to motivate students to read and in the process, become stronger readers.

Reading is Fundamental Grant
Dear Parent/Guardian(s) of Intermediate student(s),
Over the summer, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) contacted Spring Hill ISD to let us know that our local Dollar General was interested in partnering with us through “Reading Is Fundamental” Books for Ownership Program. Through this partnership, 2,865 books will be given to students PreK-5th grade.
Special thanks to Mike Fischer (Assistant Director of DG), Chris Murphy (Assistant Director of DG), and Casey Hale (Sr. Manager of Human Resources for DG) for being part of our Book Day by presenting books to students.
