Middle School Activities

Want to be a force for change at Shirland School and surrounding community? Then, if you are recommended by teachers, join Student Council to help plan events for students at school and to help the community. 

Bump! Set! Spike! Come out and play volleyball for Shirland. We don't cut, but you do have to be in 4th grade to play. This is a co-ed team. 

Boys and Girls have their separate team and seasons, but if you want to play basketball and you are in 4th grade or older, you can play. 

Want to learn how to code and play with cool robots at the same time? Come and sign up for Robotics Club! Open for students in 3rd grade through 8th grade.

Join Mrs. Clinite and test your academia information. You must be in 7th or 8th grade to join.

Test and improve your mathematical skills with Mrs. Pals. You must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade to compete!

Help decorate lockers and run the concession stand at athletic events. 

A spring tradition at Shirland for years!  Join us for a fun day enjoying America's favorite pastime at Miller Park!

Another spring tradition at Shirland.  7th and 8th grade students will tour historical sites and have a great time on our day trip to Springfield!

Join the Cheerleading team at Shirland. There are no cuts and you must be in 4th grade to participate. 

Love to sing? Then join choir with Ms. Heavilin. This elective meets during the school day during middle school specials, but  has some after school performances.  

Love to play the trombone or any other instrument? Then join band with Ms. Heavilin. This elective meets during the school day during middle school specials, but  has some after school performances.

Improve your art skills with Mrs. James in an elective for middle school students that takes place during study hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Permission slip from parents and teachers required along with art supplies. 

Help Mrs. Dobnick create a memorable yearbook that the entire school enjoys! You get to take pictures, create spreads, and eventually publish your work.

Compete in the IJAS regional science fair individually or with a small team! This is a rigorous extra curricular project!

Must be in 7th or 8th grade to join.

Introducing for the 2024-2025 School year...a trial Chess Club! If it proves to be a success, it will be a perminant addition to Shirland!
