Sharing the Precepts

Sharing the Precepts (After 2020)

I wanted to go in a slightly different direction with my practice. I call it Sharing the Precepts. My hope is that people will take the precepts together at the end of 2021 and offer to give the precepts to other lay practioners. This web of practice, everyday, in the midst of our busy lives, feels alive to me.

As of the beginning of the year, I will no longer offer traditional zen ordinations or ceremonies. People that have taken the lay precepts and priest ordination with me are list here. Likewise, Tom Baker is listed as the person that received Shuso training and completed the course work necessary to work with students and give dharma talks.

Although my direction is different, I do fully support traditional Soto practice and feel confident in all the people that I have given precepts or ordinations to in the Soto style.

The Wagesa or Lay stole is what I now wear and I want to share a ceremony and practice with fellow lay non priests to share what they know, to sit with people and to offer Buddha's precepts.

We have completed two lay precept ceremonies as of May 2022.

At our first ceremony on December 31, 2021 Nadine Lau and Chris Heinlein sewed wagesa or lay robes and took the five lay precepts.

Congratulations Nadine and Chris!
