Analysis of packet delay in upstream communications

What kind of research?

We am analyzing the latency in optical access networks that we usually use at home. In particular, we are analyzing PON (Passive Optical Network), which is an optical access network that will be a fundamental technology for 5G. PON is a technology that splits the optical line from the optical line terminating equipment owned by the optical communication company to the terminating equipment in each home using splitters, and is currently a popular method because it enables efficient network use.

This method uses a method in which transmission time is shared with other termination devices for upstream communications such as video uploading. Therefore, the upload time may be significantly longer. In order to reduce the upload time for the packets, this research analyzes how to transmit the packet by using queueing theory.

Proposal of delay time reduction method in EPON

We use queueing theory to analyze how the average delay time can be significantly improved by modifying the protocol used in the PON scheme called EPON.

Analysis of average delay time in LRPON

There is a growing debate about Long Reach PON technology, in which the distance between the terminating device in each home and the telecommunications company's terminating device can be as long as 100 km. We analyze the delay time of PON technology to be used in the next generation using queueing theory.
