The main research activity of Mele Lab is focused on the improvement of performance of nanoengineered thermoelectric and superconducting materials via introduction of artifical defect at the nanoscale.

This research activity is conducted on thin film materials fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and metal-organic deposition (MOD) state-of-the art machines available in the laboratory.

Another research activity is the fabrication and testing of thin-film based thermoelectric modules to be used as out-of-the-grid power sources for IoT devices, nodes and sensors.

Dense pellets of functional materials, to be studied as bulks or used as targets for PLD, can be fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) available as shared facility.

Lab members recruitment!

Mele Lab is always looking forward to new lab members to be involved in exciting research themes

Motivated candidates in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering fields from any country are welcome. Please contact Paolo Mele with your profile! The selection will be done by CV evaluation and interviews system. Requirements: high motivation, flexibility to adapt to new life and working conditions, capacity to work in a team, be open to dialogue and accept constructive criticism when necessary. A plus requirement is the ability to build instrumental devices and write code to interface them to computers for controlling and data collection.

The new Innovative Global Program (IGP) offered by Shibaura Institute of Technology is entirely in English: it is a great opportunity for Japanese or foreign students! You will have the opportunity to be engaged in research at the lab from your first year! Have a look to the application system and do not hesitate to choose Mele Lab for your IGP bachelor application!

For graduate students who took degree and want to continue their education at Shibaura Institute of Technology, or any other undergraduate students from Japan or abroad. The Global course of engineering and science (Genes) is a master course offered entirely in English and Mele lab is welcoming master students! Guidelines to apply for the enrollment as master student at Shibaura Institute of technology are here. Internships at Mele Lab are also possible via Research Exchange Program/Laboratory Internship Program

Mele lab offers to its PhD students the opportunity to conduct top-notch research, publish papers, and present research in international conferences! Japanese and foreign candidates are welcome!  Shibaura Institute of Technology has open positions for doctor course students twice a year (Spring and Fall semester). Guidelines to apply for the enrollment as doctoral student at Shibaura Institute of technology are here. Applications to undertake the Doctoral course at Mele Lab must be submitted to the Regional Environment System

Mele lab welcomes brilliant candidates holding a PhD grade in Science or engineering! The best opportunity is to conduct the 2 years research under the JSPS fellowship (Applications are mandatory and open twice per year). Doctors who graduated at Shibaura Institute of Technology have also the additional opportunity to apply for internal postdoctoral positions twice per year (ask Prof. Mele about details).
