Shenandoah County Public Schools have entered agreements with Laurel Ridge Community College, James Madison University, and Shenandoah University to offer courses that provide credit at the secondary and post-secondary levels. In order to enroll in these courses, students must meet the following criteria: a) be a junior or senior, b) complete an on-line application, c) complete an enrollment form, d) take an on-line placement test if applicable, and e) pay a portion of the tuition if applicable. These courses are held at SCPS sites. Instructors and course curricula meet the post-secondary criteria. For specific descriptions of the dual enrolled course refer to the appropriate subject area in this book. Any course in this book may be dual enrolled if all criteria for dual enrollment are in place.
Each university/college has its own criteria regarding the transfer of college credit and as to whether those credits will count towards specific program credits or general elective credits. Institutions also reserve the right to change their credit requirements which may result in the institution no longer awarding or accepting credit for dual enrollment courses. For this reason, students are highly encouraged to communicate with the institutions they are interested in attending to determine how each will award credit for the individual dual enrollment courses. Students should also talk to their school counselor for assistance prior to enrolling.
Any courses offered at SCPS high schools that count toward the Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) through Laurel Ridge Community College will be provided to students at no cost. Courses not included in the UCGS will require payment of tuition. No fees are required for students who do not dually enroll with Laurel Ridge Community College.
