Eligibility
Screening of the total school population is an ongoing process through the efforts of the GATE Resource Specialists, who regularly provide information to their respective faculties regarding the characteristics of academically gifted students, including under-served populations, and actively encourage educator referrals. Referrals by parents, community members, and students, including the student him/herself are also encouraged. To initiate a referral, the person making a referral must contact the school's principal or the GATE Resource Specialist and complete a Gifted Program Referral Form.
With permission of the parent, an assessment process begins, which includes collecting data from teachers, parents, ability testing, a student interview (or grades for High Schoolers), and sometimes samples of student work. This information is used to develop a profile of the student being considered.
Following assessment, eligibility is determined through a review of all collected data by the school's GATE Identification Committee. Parents are notified of the decision, and, in the case of ineligibility, of their right to process for appealing the decision. In the case of ineligibility with monitoring, the student will be monitored for approximately one year by the classroom teacher and the GATE Resource Specialist for additional data, after which time, the school's GATE Identification Committee will consider any new data supporting eligibility.
