When Chromebooks are distributed to students they must familiarize themselves with these guidelines and/or reinforce their knowledge with a review before receiving their device.
Insurance: Details of the insurance policy are detailed in the 1:1 Device Insurance Program Form each School year.
Training: Information will be available on the Shelton Public Schools homepage for students and families to refer to as needed.
Return: Student Chromebooks, power adaptors, and cases will be collected at the end of each school year for maintenance over summer break. Students will retain their original Chromebook each year through eighth grade. It is our hope that upon entering ninth grade they will receive a newer Chromebook to complete their education through twelfth grade. At this time this is still a work in progress. When asked to do so, students must return the Chromebook, power adaptor and case to their homeroom teacher. Any student who transfers out of SPS will be required to return their Chromebook and accessories. If Chromebook and accessories are not returned, the parent/guardian will be held responsible for the full replacement cost of the device and accessories.
Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromebook which they have been issued by the district. Chromebooks that are broken or fail to work properly must be communicated with the students homeroom teacher. A report will be submitted to the Technology Department and a loaner Chromebook, if needed, will be issued to the student until their assigned Chromebook can be repaired or replaced.
User Tips and Precautions:
○ Only dry snacks are allowed near the Chromebooks while in use. No wet food or drink.
○ Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into the Chromebook.
○ Chromebooks should not be carried while the screen is open unless directed to do so by a teacher.
○ Chromebooks should be closed and placed in their protective case when not in use to conserve battery life and keep safe.
○ Students are to use the Chromebook case provided by the district when transporting the Chromebook between classes and to and from school. Chromebooks should never be shoved into a locker or wedged into a backpack as this may break the screen.
○ Chromebooks should not be exposed to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Extreme heat or cold may cause damage to the device.
○ DO NOT LEAVE CHROMEBOOK IN A VEHICLE.
○ Chromebooks should be brought to room temperature prior to turning on.
Screen Care: The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.
○ Do not lean on top of the Chromebook.
○ Do not place anything near the Chromebook that could put pressure on the screen.
○ Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover.
○ Do not poke the screen.
○ Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, notebooks).
○ Clean the screen with a soft, dry anti-static, or micro-fiber cloth. Do not use window cleaner or any type of liquid or water on the Chromebook. You can also purchase individually packaged pre-moistened eyeglass lens cleaning tissues to clean the screen. These are very convenient and relatively inexpensive.
At School: Students must be responsible for bringing their Chromebook to all classes, unless specifically advised not to do so by their teachers. The Chromebook will be a resource for students to use to aid in their learning. There will be a continued balance between screen time and non screen time activities.
At Home: All students are required to take their Chromebook home each night throughout the school year. Chromebooks must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Students need to show responsibility in bringing their devices to school just as they have been required to be responsible for bringing other needed learning materials. If students leave their Chromebook at home a Chromebox may be available for use in the classroom, however, they may need to make up assignments at home that evening if needed. The Chromebook is to be used to complete school based assignments and not for personal use. The designated student should be the only one using the Chromebook, unless parent/guardian support is needed to help the student in completing their assignment. Go Guardian monitors student usage and will notify the Technology Department if the Chromebook is being used for non educational purposes assigned by the students teachers.
Students MUST leave their AC Adapter power cord (charger) at home. It is highly recommended that upon receiving your Chromebook you set up a safe charging area for your Chromebook to be changed each night and this becomes part of your nightly routine just the same as charging a cell phone. If fully charged over the course of the night at home, the battery will last throughout the school day without needing to be recharged.
Sound: Sound should be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Personal headphones can be used to access educational videos or use the text to speech feature.
Please also refer to the Student Chromebook Pledge Responsible Use Policy that was signed and returned by each student/family for additional information.
Managing Your Files and Saving Your Work:
Students will create and save documents in Google Drive. Google Drive is a cloud storage service that allows students to store their documents and more online all in one place. From Google Drive, students can create, share, and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more from anywhere while online. Documents created in Google Drive are automatically stored online and on the Chromebook itself, making the document available when Internet access is not available.
Personalizing Your Chromebook:
Chromebooks must remain free of any decorative writing, drawing, stickers, paint, tape or labels that are not the property of the Shelton Public School District or placed on the device by a teacher. Spot checks for compliance will be done throughout the school year.
Repairing or Replacing Your Chromebook:
Chromebooks Undergoing Repair:
● Loaner Chromebooks may be issued to students when they leave their Chromebook for repair at the Chromebook Help Desk in the Media Center.
● With the purchase of insurance students are alloted 2 repairs due to misuse or abusive handling.
● If the Chromebook malfunctions and the damage is not due to misuse or abusive handling, the student will be issued a loaner Chromebook while repairs are being made.
● Parents will be billed for Chromebook damage that is a result of misuse or abusive handling after allotted 2 repairs are accounted for or if the insurance was waived by the family. Parents may be billed for repairs, parts, labor, and/or full replacement. Please revisit the 1:1 Device Insurance Program Form for more specifics.
