Note to parents: In your weekly summaries, some assignments are telling you they are not complete. I showed your students how Google Classroom works and that many of the assignments posted in Google Classroom need the students to "mark as done" because some documents do not communicate with Google Classroom. If your student knows the assignment is done, have them push the "mark as done" button in the assignment.

    • By looking at my blog and your student's Readworks or No Red Ink accounts, you should be able to see what your student has completed. I have updated INOW as of today. If you notice the marking of "late", that tells you that the student did not complete the assignment when it was due.

I can write an interesting lead.

      • Begin your new NRI assignment (remember to mark "turn in" in Google Classroom when you finish.)

To expect and encourage nothing but the best in a nurturing, opportunity-rich environment.

Required Daily Materials

Materials that the student will be responsible for bringing to class EVERY day:

  • Two pocket folder with loose leaf paper in one pocket – This should be labeled and used exclusively for English Language Arts (ELA).
  • Composition Notebook - will be left in classroom
  • Pencils with an eraser & pens of your choice– It is always a good idea to have a red or green pen
  • OMMS Agenda - write down homework
  • We will read several books together and I will ask that you purchase a personal copy of two of them, but also bring your own book to read

Procedures

Beginning of Class

    1. Enter quietly.
    2. Go to your assigned seat.
    3. Copy any homework assignments into your agenda.
    4. Read announcement board for the work you are to begin.

***Don’t wait for the bell to ring -- class begins when you enter the room. All of the above should be done before the bell rings. If you are not in your seat with your materials out and have not begun to work when the tardy bell rings, you may be considered tardy.

During Class

    1. Request permission before you speak out.
    2. Stay in your seat unless you have permission to be out of it.
    3. No eating, drinking, or chewing gum in this class.
    4. Treat everyone and everything in this class with respect.

End of Class

    1. At the bell, sit quietly and wait for me to dismiss you.
    2. Clean the area around your desk, making sure to throw away all paper or trash you have dropped.
    3. Walk out of the room taking all of your belongings with you. HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Make-Up Work

1. Each student is responsible for making up work that was missed. It is the student’s responsibility to check the class website and Google Classroom regarding missed assignments, notes, and Bell Ringers.

2. See me before or after class.

3. Copy work from another student.

4. Check my absence folders for notes/handouts. Get any handouts that you missed.

5. Make arrangements with me regarding when to make up missed tests and quizzes.

Homework

    1. Homework is posted daily on the front board and on my blog and will be discussed orally in class.
    2. Write down all homework in your agenda even if you have already completed it.
    3. In order to receive full credit for a homework assignment, you must have the assignment with you in the classroom on the day it is due.

Discipline

*Follow all school and classroom rules. School rules can be found in the Code of Conduct booklet. Classroom rules are as follows to exemplify Eagle PRIDE: Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Excellence

· Be “NOTHING BUT THE BEST!”

Every student’s success is very important to me. If we work together as a team, we can maintain a positive, effective learning environment. Your questions and comments are always welcome.

Feel free to email me at npierce@shelbyed.org or call the front office (682-5210) to set up a conference if necessary. I look forward to a great year filled with “Nothing but the Best!”

Sincerely,

Ms. Pierce

“Every Assignment Every Time” EAET Policy:

Assignments are a vital component of a child’s learning experience. Work is expected to be completed on time. Incomplete and/or poorly attempted assignments are not acceptable.

Procedure:

  • If an assignment is incomplete, poorly attempted, or not submitted on time, the student will receive a notice requiring a parent signature and an opportunity to complete the assignment.
  • Students who turn in the parent-signed notice and completed assignment on time the following school day (refer to EAET form) will receive 60% of the earned grade. Failure to do so results in an Academic Saturday School referral and the assignment will be completed for 50% of the earned grade.
  • Upon the fourth and subsequent EAET form (per subject, per grading period), the assignment may be completed for 50% of the earned grade, and the student will be automatically referred to Academic Saturday School.

Assessment:

Shelby County Middle and High Schools use a weighted grading system. The 3 levels are listed below.

Bronze - 10% (Formative assessments - homework, classwork, bell ringers)

Silver - 30% (Quizzes, pop, quizzes, cumulative reviews, projects)

Gold - 60% (Summative assessments on units and the nine-weeks)

The goal is to have a minimum of 10 bronze, 6 silver and 4 gold grades each nine weeks.

Parents may view their child’s performance from home through the Free Access to our INOW Grade Book system.

Additional Information:

  1. Make Up Work - Each student is responsible for making up work that was missed including bell ringers, notes, homework assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects. Work must be made up in accordance with the rules set forth in the Shelby County Code of Conduct. Work not submitted within the time limit will receive a grade of zero. It is the student’s responsibility to check on the blog or with me regarding missed assignments, notes, and bellringers.
  2. Hall Passes - No passes will be given during class except for an emergency or for something that I deem necessary. IF passes are given, students must return within a reasonable length of time. Please use the time between classes to gather all of your necessary supplies for class, use the restroom, conference with a teacher, talk to your friends, etc.
  3. Textbooks - Students will sign out a textbook from me the first week of school. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with his or her book throughout the year. A feel will be charged for any lost or heavily damaged book at the end of the year.
  4. Emergency Procedures - in the event of a tornado, fire, or other emergency situation, the teacher will follow the standard procedures noted by the Shelby County Code of Conduct and the school.
  5. What is a Bell Ringer? - Bell ringers are quick, daily assignments for students to complete during the first five minutes of class. They consist of, but are not limited to, computation problems, technology integration, writing assignments, brain teasers, and pre or post assessment for some lessons.

Technology

  1. Cell Phones - All cell phones should be off and placed in lockers by 7:40 a.m. These should remain inaudible throughout the school day.
  2. Google Classroom - Students will have assignments provided to them through google classroom (internet based). They will log in with their shelbyed.org email address. We will use after the students go through media training at school.
