What is CTE?
Career and Technical Education is a rigorous, relevant curriculum that prepares students for high demand, high wage careers. Students have the opportunity to earn industry recognized certifications, post-secondary dual credit, and participate in real-world work-based learning experiences.
Does Shelby County Public Schools offer CTE courses?
SCPS offers 17 CTE programs that branch off into over 25 pathways that serve over 900 students. Our CTE programs are located on three campuses: Martha Layne Collins High School, Shelby County High School, and the Shelby County Area Technology Center.
How do I begin to explore a pathway?
Speak with your counselor. Most pathways are available starting during the freshman year, however some begin during the sophomore year.
How many courses are there in a pathway?
Each pathway has a four course sequence. Each course leads to one high school elective credit upon successful completion.
Can I earn dual-credit in my CTE course?
Yes, some of our pathways offer at least six hours of dual credit and some as much as 18-21 hours. These college credits come at no expense to the family through the Work Ready Scholarship. See your counselor for more information.
If I do not have a passion for my original pathway, may I choose another one?
Although it is best practice to stay in your pathway so you increase your chances of earning an industry certification, high school is about exploring and finding your passion. Students are allowed to choose another pathway that they find relevant and interesting.
Can I earn an Industry Certification?
Yes, all of our pathways will provide students the opportunity to earn an industry recognized certification during the third and fourth course of their pathway.
Can I participate in work-based learning?
Yes! Your schedule should have room for a work-based learning opportunity, typically during your junior or senior year. The SCPS Work-Based Learning Liaison and the Work-Based Learning coach will help you find an appropriate fit that will allow you to take the skills you learned in the classroom and apply them to the workplace.
